Charlotte's talking stomach.

Today we visited the archives in Whitechapel, to find out the various uses of buildings over a period of time. We chose three different years and got to work! Of course my stomach decided to try and communicate with people but, hey! (Not literally, but I was really hungry..) It was weird seeing how the uses of a certain property had changed, it may have once been a family's pride and joy, their little linen shop, but now is a rarely thought about "Morley's Fried Chicken".

We have spent the afternoon (trying to) research the buildings, but google is being incompetent today. :(

After finishing my AS levels in English, History, Biology and German I thought it would be great fun to do a week long work experience placement with the Building Exploratory. I have always had a great interest in architecture but especially in the realm of urban planning and design. I also love impressive buildings like sports stadia. Therefore I find many of the projects at the Building Exploratory really captivating, especially surrounding the redevelopment of this part of East London and the legacy of the Olympic Stadium. Whilst here I hope to help organise a workshop for primary schools, provoking thought about the legacy of the olympics and help record significant historic places in Haggerston. I hope I can develop my knowledge of the history of london but also have fun learning about something that really fascinates me.

I am also a big fan of sketching buildings, I play a bit of guitar and I am a massive West Ham fan!

About Jonny

Im undertaking my work placement with The Building Exploratory for 4 weeks from May 16th onwards. I am a Masters Student at University College London, studying Cultural Heritage Studies. Before my MA I used to work as an archaeologist for the Museum of London for three years, excavating sites all across the city, including the Olympics, Thameslink at Borough Market and in the City of London. Whilst here I hope to take part and learn about the wide variety of work the Building Exploratory does and gain experience in a dynamic, educational organisation. Hopefully I can make use of some of my past experience too to help shape some of their new archaeology workshops too.
